General Information
Actually the climate varies drastically depending on your destination and due to Colombia’s equatorial location, temperature variations are determined by altitude rather than seasonality. Therefore, given the country’s wide range of landscapes, there is almost never a bad time to visit. You might think Colombia is hot and tropical, but that’s not the whole story. In fact, you’ll find temperate and chilly climates in cities such as Medellín and Bogotá. What makes Colombia’s climate so diverse? It’s all about altitude. Every 1,000-foot increase means an estimated 3.5°F temperature decrease, which means very hot temperatures at sea level cool down the higher you go.
Colombians describe their climate in three ways: hot, temperate, and cold, which are known as thermal floors, or pisos térmicos. These altitude-driven variations in climate control the country’s plant and animal life, and due to Colombia’s geography, it boasts one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world!
Don’t expect four clearly defined seasons in Colombia, instead, you’ll find rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season comes in April to May and October to November, and dry season is usually in December to January and July to August, though this can vary considerably.
When traveling to different regions in Colombia, be prepared for the specific climate and landscape. Pack layers for the Andean region, light and loose clothing for the Caribbean coast, waterproof clothes for the Pacific coast, light and comfortable clothes for the Orinoco plains, and very light clothing for the Amazon Basin. And don’t forget the mosquito repellent, a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of sunblock! Now, you’re ready to take on Colombia’s diverse climate like a pro!
Hola Amigo If you’re planning to go mountain biking in Colombia, you better pack your bags properly! Here are some things you should definitely not forget to bring along for your ride:
Proper Riding Gear: You don’t want to look like a newbie on the trails, so pack some good quality gear like helmets, gloves, padded shorts, and a cycling jersey that breathes. You may also want to bring some knee and elbow pads to avoid any unwanted bruises.
Hydration and Snacks: Don’t forget to pack a hydration backpack, water, and snacks to keep you fueled on long rides. Pro-tip: Trail mix is not just for the trails!
First-Aid Kit: A small basic first-aid kit is always a smart move, just in case you get any boo-boos on the trail. Don’t forget to include any medications you need, especially if you’re allergic to bee stings or have a heart condition!
Repair Kit: Bring a basic bike repair kit with you, just in case you experience any bike-related issues like a flat tire, chain malfunction, or a loose brake.
Weather-Appropriate Clothing: The weather in Colombia is unpredictable, so make sure to pack rain gear and something warm in case it gets chilly. Don’t forget comfortable clothes for off-the-bike activities, too!
Sun and Bug Protection: Colombia’s equatorial location means that the sun is extra strong, so don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and bug spray.
Electronics: You wouldn’t want to miss documenting your adventures! So, bring a GPS device or smartphone with maps downloaded, a camera or action camera, a fully charged power bank, and a headlamp or flashlight for night exploring.
Language Resources: You don’t need to be fluent in Spanish, but some basic language resources like a translation app or phrasebook could be helpful when communicating with locals.
Personal Items: Of course, don’t forget to pack your personal items like toiletries, a towel, and prescription medication. And don’t worry, we won’t judge you for packing a favorite stuffed animal, too.
Sense of Adventure: Last but not least, bring an attitude of gratitude, thanks and appreciation for what your about to experience here! Colombia is the second most biodiverse country on the planet and your about to see things you have never knew exsisted! The discoveries you will make here on every ride are just stunning and the scenery, is breathtaking. Colombia going rock you so bring your sense of adventure and humor! You never know what kind of wacky situations you might encounter on the trails!
Hold onto your socks, folks! The good news is, you don’t have to brave a needle in your arm for Yellow Fever to visit Colombia. Yay! But, if you want to be extra safe and sound, it’s not a bad idea to have a little chat with your doctor. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are the cool kids of vaccinations and we suggest getting them at least two weeks before your trip. And listen up, Malaria is a bit of a party crasher in the lowland areas, but if you’re heading to the Andes or exploring Colombia, you can leave the Malaria prophylaxis at home. Just a friendly reminder though, we’re not going to ask for proof of any of these vaccinations to join our adventures. So, kick back, relax, and enjoy the ride!
Ahoy there, water drinkers! Now, the big question on everyone’s lips: Is the water safe to drink in Colombia? Is it safe in Ohio? Well, we’ve got a real zinger for you – we use bottled water! Yeah, baby! It’s easy peasy and so darn convenient for all our riders. Sure, the water in Colombia is generally safe, but we ain’t taking any chances in those itty-bitty towns and villages. We want our riders to have the time of their lives without any bathroom emergencies, ya know what we mean? So, let’s play it safe and stick to the bottled water, even when we brush our pearly whites. Oh, and one more thing, folks – we steer clear of ice in our drinks. Sometimes it can contain bacteria, and nobody wants a party-pooper like that!
Hey there, don’t go bananas over Colombia’s visa requirements! All you gotta do is make sure your passport is not a fossil and will be valid for at least 6 months after you leave. As far as tourist visa goes, most of you lucky fellas don’t need it. That’s right, if you’re from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Israel, and a bunch of other countries, you’re golden! If you’re still scratching your head about what you need, don’t be shy, just give us a holler and we’ll be happy to give you the 411.
We’ll take care of everything for you, from the moment you arrive at the airport, to the moment you leave with a broken heart because you don’t want to leave!
We’ll take you to some remote and unique locations, so you can experience the real Colombia. But don’t worry, we’ve done all the scouting and have selected the best quality facilities in each location, ensuring a comfortable stay. And if you’re lucky, you might even get to sleep in a hammock!
During the adventure, we’ll provide you with delicious meals, trail snacks, and sports hydration, so you can focus on enjoying the ride. And we’ve got all your adventure related transportation needs covered, from buses to gondolas, and everything in between. Yep, that’s right, we said gondolas!
You’ll be riding with our professional, multi-lingual guides, who will be there to support you every step of the way. And as a special treat, you’ll receive a Mountain Bike Colombia MTB style riding shirt to wear on this adventure. Who doesn’t love free stuff, right?
But wait, there’s more! We’re not just about the riding, we want you to truly experience the vast wilderness spaces here, understand the many local cultures, and of course, the local riding community too! That’s why we’ve included wilderness and cultural excursions to typical villages and natural features. And if you have any mechanical issues with your bike, don’t worry, we’ll fix it faster than you can say “vámonos”.
We want to make your trip as stress-free as possible, we will be sending you a “lets get ready to roll” guide full of useful information to help you prepare for departure once you book your trip. Plus, we’ll introduce you to someone who can even take care of your soiled laundry in the various towns we visit! This way you can keep your photos fresh and clean. So, don’t worry about packing too much or getting your clothes dirty, we’ve got you covered.
And the best part? We’re here to help you extend your trip if you want to explore more of Colombia. Our local knowledge is at your disposal, so take advantage of it and make the most of your time in this beautiful country. Just don’t blame us if you never want to leave!
We know your bike is your baby, but if you can’t bring it with you, don’t worry. We’ll provide you with a good quality, well-maintained hard tail cross-country style bike rental to use on your adventure. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s hit the trails and make some unforgettable memories! Trust us, your friends will be so jealous of your adventure that they’ll want to unfriend you on social media.
We’re stoked to take you on the wildest MTB Adventures in Colombia! Just a heads up, we want you to be safe and sound while shredding those trails, so we need you to have medical insurance – we don’t want you to end up in a hospital bed instead of a hammock!
Now, we know that life can be unpredictable, so we suggest you grab some travel insurance, just in case you have to bail last minute. And if, heaven forbid, we have to cancel your trip, don’t worry, we’ve got your back! You’ll not only get a full refund, but we’ll also hook you up with a 25% credit towards another epic escapade.
So, let’s gear up, hit the trails and make some memories! Are you ready to conquer Colombia on two wheels? Let’s go!
We don’t rent our bikes, we offer them as a part of our adventure packages. When you book with us we encourage riders to bring their own bikes. Mainly because for serious riders nothing will compare to your own baby! But we have very good quality, well maintained hard-tail MTB trail bikes for you to use. That said if you want we can absolutely rent you a propeller head rubber ducky for the handle bars to make the bike more like it’s yours. But be warned, it may attract some attention from the local wildlife. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself being chased by a pack of curious ducks on your ride. And while we do recommend bringing your own bike, we promise our rubber ducky bike will provide a quacking good time!
Are you ready to shred some serious trails in Colombia? Well, before you do, we need to make sure you have medical insurance. But don’t worry, we can help you get covered here in Colombia too. Trust us, you don’t want to end up like that one guy who broke his leg and had to sell his bike just to pay the medical bills. And hey, if you’re worried about the cost, don’t be! It’s actually cheaper than buying a round of beers at a fancy bar. So let’s get you covered and get ready for some epic riding!
Hey amigo! Planning on shredding some gnarly trails in Colombia? Well, let me tell you, you better pack more than just your helmet and kneepads. Don’t forget to grab some travel insurance before you hit those peaks!
Check out your home insurance, or renters insurance, and see if they cover you for any mishaps on your journey. You don’t want to be stuck without coverage if something goes wrong! And trust me, anything can happen when you’re tearing down those slopes.
But if your insurance doesn’t cut it, fear not my friend! There are plenty of travel insurance companies out there that offer affordable options for trip cancellations, medical expenses, lost bags, and even theft. So go ahead and book that trip, but make sure you’re protected while you’re out there living your best life!
Ha! Forget about playing the money exchange game, my friend. Save yourself the hassle and the hilarious mishaps that can come with it. Just bring a bit of local cash with you, and let the ATMs do the rest!
No need to go digging for buried treasure to pay for your travels, because ATMs are literally everywhere, like pigeons in the city. And they’ve got your back with fair exchange rates, so you don’t have to worry about getting ripped off like a cheap shirt in a tornado.
But let’s be real, who wants to deal with the pain in the butt that comes with traveler’s checks? Not me, not you, not anyone with a functioning brain! They’re a hassle to exchange and can leave you feeling like you just got swindled by a used car salesman. So take our advice and stick to the ATMs, my friend. Your wallet (and your sanity) will thank you later!
Guess what? You don’t have to tip on our MTB trips, but if your guide blows your mind with their skills, advice or shows you how to safely jump over a 7 meter anaconda on the trail or your driver makes you laugh so hard you snort, it’s always nice to show some love. Now, if you’re feeling generous, most folks throw down about $5-$10 per day for their guide and $1-$5 per day for their driver. But if you want to go the extra mile, you could bring some cool cycling gear from your hometown as a gift. Either way, no stress – just pedal, smile, and soak in the adventure!
Electricity in Colombia is 110 volts, the same as the US. Visitors from outside of the US should bring an adapter. Plugs are either two flat prongs or two flat prongs with an additional round grounding pin.
Sure we’re super stoked to help you with your Colombian travel plans! From the best biking trails to the tastiest empanadas, we’ve got you covered. And after your epic adventure with us we’ll keep your bike safer than a squirrel with a nut stash, at absolutely no cost to you! But if you’re feeling extra adventurous and want to ship your bike to explore more of this awesome country, don’t sweat it! We can hook you up with transportation for your bike too, but just a heads up, it might cost you a couple of pesos. So, give us a holler and let us be your personal tour guides through the land of arepas and salsa!
We highly recommend bringing a dual suspension or quality Hard Tail trail bike with high quality components for all our mountain bike adventures. Our trips offer a thrilling mix of cross country and trail riding, so it’s crucial to have a well maintained bike with good suspension and all-around disk brakes. This ensures your safety and prevents any issues with parts availability in remote areas should a part fail. To ensure your bike is in tip-top shape, we strongly suggest arriving with fresh tires and newly broken-in brake pads, as we’ll be doing more riding and descending in one week than most people do in an entire season. Be sure to pack an extra set of brake pads, as they are often appreciated halfway through the trip. Helmets are mandatory during riding, but other protective gear is optional. We recommend each rider brings a small day pack to carry snacks and gear to stay warm and dry in changing mountain weather. Don’t forget to pack a pocket headlamp to explore some of the mountain tunnels we’ll be venturing through. Once you’re registered for a trip, we’ll send you a complete list of recommended gear to ensure you’re fully prepared for this unforgettable adventure. Get ready to launch into the ride of a lifetime!
Yaya!, you’re going to love this! There is nothing like riding your own baby, and the photos of you and your baby in Colombia are priceless! We absolutely encourage you to bring your bike along on your Colombia! MTB adventure. The good news is that all airlines flying to Colombia allow you to bring your packed bike onboard for a small additional fee, usually around $100. Don’t forget, you can also pack your riding gear in the bike bag to make your travels even easier. For all the juicy details and any additional fees, please reach out to your airline of choice. To make sure you’re fully prepared for your adventure, we also have some great bike packaging suggestions and helpful tips in our Adventure Preparations section on our website. It will just make your time here even more amazing!
Wow, it’s getting close to your departure date, can you hear the call of the wild? That’s Colombia’s Andes Mountains calling, and we strongly recommend preparing by riding so you reach that intermediate level of riding ability. Our trails will take you through a range of terrain, from smooth trails with amazing flow to super technical trails with exposure at times. Don’t worry though, our awesome guides will be with you every step of the way, helping you to improve your riding skills and providing support whenever you need it. And remember, you know your limits, so if you feel like a portion of the trail should be walked, that’s totally fine! In fact, we walk sometimes just to see and photograph the birds and monkeys!
To make the most of this incredible experience, all riders should be fit and able to ride a bike for over 4 hours per day for seven consecutive days. Some days might require long climbs of over an hour, while other parts of the ride might have short, steep climbs with some hike-a-bike portions to access remote mountain passes and lone summits. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with a specifically designed training program to ensure that you’re in top shape and can enjoy every single moment on the bike. You can find our adventure training guide in the adventure preparation section of our website. So get ready to take on the Andes Mountains like a pro, and let’s make some unforgettable memories together!
Oh, heck yeah! Your going to want to extend your adventure beyond the expiration date of your visa!! But no problemo, we’ve got your back! Just give us the deets on how you want to spice up your trip, and we’ll try our darnest to make it happen. We’re like your Colombian Mountain Biking fairy godmother, but with fewer sparkles and more caffeine.
Oh boy, single day MTB adventures are a breeze! But when it comes to multi-day excursions, things can get as complicated as solving a Rubik’s cube with your toes. Accommodations can be scarcer than a parking spot at a Black Friday sale. If you can’t make it on the predetermined departure dates we have listed, don’t be shy, let us know pronto! As long as there are at least four riders, we can probably wiggle some alternative departure dates for you. If privacy is more your thing, you can even book a private adventure with just two riders, as long as we can rustle up a place for you to crash. But lets figure it out together so we can hit the trails, baby!
Looking to have an adrenaline-filled Mountain Bike Colombia adventure at the last minute? No problem, we’ve got you covered! Just be ready to be flexible, well-organized, and ready to roll! And don’t worry, we can still help you get that medical insurance (because let’s face it, you might need it!).
But beware, your first choice adventure may not be available for your selected dates. So, if you’re feeling lucky, just shout or chat us and we’ll see what we can do! And if you want to make sure you get the adventure of your dreams, you might want to consider going private. Just be prepared to pay up front and act fast – accommodation providers won’t hold spaces for last-minute bookings, and rubber duckies on the handlebars might cost extra!
Well, well, well, looks like we have a solo traveler here! Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Our Colombia MTB Adventures are perfect for those who are looking to have some “me” time. And if you’re worried about accommodations, don’t be. We’ll find you a partner to share a room with, as long as you don’t snore like a grizzly bear. But if you’re one of those people who can’t bear to share a room, we have a solo supplement adventure option available. Just be prepared to fork over some extra cash. So, come on, join us for a ride, and let’s hope your roommate doesn’t keep you up all night with their snoring.
Our MTB adventures attract adventurous people of all ages, but mostly those who haven’t quite grown up yet. We’ve had riders from their 20s to their 40s, but we’ve also had some wild seniors between 50 to 70 who like to live on the edge and chase after wildlife. So if you’re an old-timer who’s still got it, we won’t write you off just yet! Just remember, on our adventures, it’s not about the number of years you’ve lived, it’s about the number of miles you can ride without collapsing. And don’t worry about feeling out of place in a group, our club adventures are like a melting pot of ages and nationalities. It’s like a real-life “It’s a Small World” ride, but with bikes and way more sweat.
We’ve got it all – private vans, comfortable buses, boats, flights, gondolas, Colombian Chivas and who knows what else we might throw in there. We like to mix it up and keep things interesting. But don’t worry, we’ll make sure to choose the safest and most efficient transportation for each area. Just check out the itinerary for the full list of transportation options, but be warned – you never know what kind of crazy ride we might have in store for you!
We’ve got meals covered! Our ride leader will even be your personal foodie guide, recommending the best spots in town to chow down. And if you’re lucky, they might even share their secret stash of hot sauce with you.
So, get ready for some unique accommodations on your MTB adventure in Colombia! We’ll be visiting some off-the-beaten-path locations, including tiny pueblos and indigenous communities. Our accommodations range from cozy bed and breakfasts to comfortable hostels and hotels, and we always choose locally owned spots that capture the essence of the area. Just remember, the more remote the location, the higher the chance you’ll have to share your room with some friendly neighborhood critters. Don’t worry, we’ve trained them not to eat our guests.
For summer trips it is best to book by the beginning of March to take advantage of interesting airfares. Please contact us for tips on airfare.
Minimum age of our adventures is 15 years old. All guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult family member. Please remember that all guests regardless of age must have the fitness level and technical ability as described earlier in the list of FAQs.
Mountain Bike Colombia Adventures accommodate a maximum of 8 guests to maintain the adventure and experience quality. On private and Club multi-day adventures a maximum of 10 guests are the limit. Two guides are always present on our multi-day adventures at all times to guarantee the safety of the group and a trouble free adventure. Our adventures are also accompanied by a support vehicle when not on the trail. On the trails the group is divided into two smaller riding teams. We find that a small number of riders allows everyone to feel more comfortable and a good ambiance settles in from day one.
- 91+ days prior to your trip – No cancellation fees. 61 – 90 days prior to your trip – cancellation fee of $500 USD 0 – 60 days prior to your trip – NON-REFUNDABLE IF CANCELED. Travel/Cancellation insurance is strongly recommended.
Hold onto your bike helmets, because our ride leaders are no ordinary two-wheeled warriors. These guys and gals are so impressive, they can speak English and Spanish simultaneously while doing a wheelie! Not only that, but they know the ins and outs of every route we take, like the back of their padded cycling shorts.
Our ride leaders are among the very best in the country. They eat hills for breakfast and descend them faster than a toupee in a hurricane. But don’t worry, they won’t leave you in their dust. They’ll treat you like their cycling soulmates, showing you all the hotspots and hidden gems like you’re old pals.
Colombia is five hours behind GMT. Colombia has one time zone, COT, and they do not observe daylight saving time.
Check with your cell phone provider. Each company is different and they can give you the most up-to-date information. For unlocked phones you can purchase a local SIM CARD for your phone.
Ok let’s keep it real! Here at Mountain Bike Colombia, we’re all about keeping our guests comfy and safe during our adventures. Because let’s be real, nothing ruins a vacay faster than getting caught up in some sticky drama.
Now, we know that crime can happen anywhere, even in this gorgeous country. But fear not, because Colombia has turned the page on it’s violent past and are now one of the most friendliest places in the Americas.
But hey, we’re not just standing around waiting for trouble to knock on the door! Nope, we’re proactive about safety! We steer well clear of any dodgy areas and make sure our guests do the same. And when it comes to protecting our precious bikes and belongings, we go the extra mile (or kilometer, since we’re in Colombia). We tuck our bikes into bed at night and snuggle up with them if there’s room (sorry, no turn-down service for bikes).
And if you’re thinking about rocking some bling on ride, we’ve got some advice for you: don’t. Let’s play it safe and leave it at home. We don’t want to tempt any opportunistic baddies.
Before your adventure our team has already made a couple check up runs to the places we will be riding. We do this to makes sure trail conditions are good and that weather has not closed passes, etc. We scout out all our routes with the precision of a hawk eyeing its prey, so you can rest assured that you’re in good hands.
And the best part? We haven’t had a single safety issue or crime incident on our adventures in the past three years (knock on wood, knock on metal, knock on carbon fiber). So relax, come join us for some heart-pumping fun and let us take care of the rest!
When it comes to MTB travel adventures in Colombia, we know the drill! We’ll make sure you get to where you need to go smoothly and without worry. If you’re flying into Medellin, we’ve got your back. We offer airport pickup and drop-off services to MDE, and we’ll arrange for our driver to whisk you away to your hotel in Guatapé. Of course, if you’re traveling with a crew and everyone’s flight schedules are all over the place, we’ll have to charge an extra fee for multiple airport runs – but trust us, it’s worth it to have everyone in the right place at the right time.
Now, if your adventure is starting closer to Bogota, no worries. We’ve got that covered too! Once you touch down in Colombia, we’ll coordinate your hotel transfers so you can sit back, relax, and let our transport take you straight to the hotel where the party’s at. Because let’s face it, who wants to waste time figuring out logistics when you could be out there living your best life?
Let’s taco ’bout Colombian food, shall we? It’s all about beans, rice, and plantains, with a side of arepas, which are basically like tortillas, but cooler. And sure, meat is popular, but who wants to be a party pooper and eat the same thing every night? Luckily, Colombia has more food options than you can shake a banana leaf at, from fresh tropical fruits to international cuisine. And don’t even get me started on the fruit smoothies and juices – they’re the real deal. Plus, Colombia’s coffee game is so strong, they should rename the country “Caffeine República.” And if our adventure, has us staying in a remote indigenous community you might stumble upon some interesting dishes like roasted ants or guinea pig – hey, when in Colombia, right?
We have some great news for you! Your Adventure package includes a free airport transfer for your group. And, if you have any extra members who need a ride, don’t worry – we’re here to help. We can accommodate your needs at a reasonable rate of $300.000 COP per trip. Just let us know in advance and we’ll make sure everyone arrives at their destination without any hassle.
Mapiripan
Guiana
Cerros de Mavecure
The Mavecure Hills, also known as the Cerros de Mavecure, are situated in Guainia department on the eastern boundary with Venezuela. This Colombian Amazonian region is as remote as it gets, but it boasts one of the nation’s most breathtaking natural marvels. The Mavecure Hills are enormous rocky formations that are remnants of the ancient Guiana Shield, some of the world’s oldest rocks. Scaling these hills at daybreak to behold the sunrise over the jungle is a truly enchanting adventure.
We’re happy to take photos of our guests while on the adventure. These are your typical tourist style selfies and were always happy to help you capture and remember the moment.
But sometimes people ask us to capture the story, to document their time riding here. A good example of this is documenting someones climb of Alto de Letras. This requires much more planning and effort because someone has to climb along with you, often ahead of you to use drones, and other heavier cameras and has to tell the story of your climb. This is much more involved and requires someone

Birding in Mitu
Mitu is the capital of Vaupes department, which is possibly the least visited region of Colombia: you can only access Mitu by plane, and it has an isolated, cut-off vibe as a result. However, the birdwatching around Mitu is the stuff of legend among Colombian birders, and avian enthusiasts will be in jungle heaven attempting to spot species such as the Fiery Topaz, Brown-banded Puffbird, Imeri Warbling-Antbird, Pavonine Quetzal and the stunning Guianan cock-of-the-rock.
Rio Apaporis
The Jirijirimo Rapids in Vaupes
The Jirijirimo Rapids, located in the southern region of Vaupes department on the Apaporis River, are often hailed as Colombia’s most remarkable hidden gem. This is quite a statement, considering the country’s many other wonders. Nevertheless, once you witness the magnificent and turbulent display captured in photos and videos, it becomes difficult to dispute their claim. To experience Jirijirimo, we can arrange a three day excursion (without bikes) It will be an unforgettable highlight of your time in Colombia.
