Colombia’s Jurassic Wilderness

Join us on a 7 day MTB adventure to explore Colombia’s Jurassic wilderness, and the waterfalls of Ventanas de Tisquizoque. This is definitely not one of those rewardless off-the-self Colombia bike tours! The adventure offers wicked climbs, some hike a bike, as well as rewarding descents. Reserved for the bold this adventure offers, riders the chance to conquer the Andes head-on mountain biking, while immersing yourself in the awe-inspiring natural beauty of South America.

First up we ride to explore the largest natural sinkhole in South America and the world’s second-largest, formed by an asteroid impact. It’s a massive and extraordinary cenoté that hosts a distinctive ecosystem with rare species of animals, birds, and plants. There’s even underground caves and river systems, with unique fish species. to explore.

Then it’s on to a remote waterfall located high in Colombia’s Jurassic wilderness. Here the river shoots out of a massive cave at the top of a mountain. It’s a place called Ventanas de Tisquizoque. Appropriately named, the cave acts as a window, rewarding those who brave the 50km uphill climb with stunning views of the surrounding countryside from inside the cave. This prehistoric Andean waterfall cascades 1000 ft with an awe-inspiring view of the wild jungle below, reminiscent of scenes from Jurassic Park. We explore the area and delve into the cave’s depths, even exploring the base of the falls.

Finally on this Colombia wilderness adventure we’ll ascend to the paramos, scaling a peak soaring to 8409ft. At the summit, we’ll encounter a narrow hanging rock extending 60 feet over the cliff edge of the cliff face, offering an unparalleled panoramic vista that will captivate your senses. This remote MTB adventure presents plenty of rewarding off-the-beaten-path Andean adventure that will not only leave you breathless but with a great sense of accomplishment.

So, strap on your helmet, grab your Jurassic steed (your bike), and let’s ride like a velociraptor amped up on caffeine, as we explore the remote wilderness spaces of the Colombian Andes.

An MTB Adventure 65 Million Years In The Making! Las Ventanas de Ventanas de Tisquizoque

65 million years ago, Colombia was a thriving Jurassic wilderness, home to a diverse range of dinosaurs. Centuries later, the Tisquizoque tribe settled in the Andes mountains and lived in harmony with nature for many years. However, their peaceful existence was disrupted by the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadores. In exchange for peace, the tribe was forced to pay hefty sums of gold to the Spanish. But when mistreatment ensued, the Cacique, or Chief, led his people in killing a Spanish messenger, resulting in the Tisquizoque becoming enemies of the Spanish.

In response, the king of Spain sent an army to wipe out the tribe and capture the Cacique. The Tisquizoque made their final stand at the top of a mountain in a cave with a waterfall, which is now known as Ventanas de Tisquizoque. Legend has it that the place was named after the chief (cacique) who ruled the land when the Spanish invaders arrived. In defiance of their plans to enslave his people, he jumped to his death.

Today, Ventanas de Tisquizoque is a remote hidden waterfall high in the Colombian Andes, far from popular tourist routes. The area is so secluded that even Indiana Jones might struggle to find it, but that only adds to the thrill. The trails are long and the mountains are in our way, but we pedal our way till we reach our destination.
