Learn Mountain Bike Colombia’s eBike Policy. Find out where e-bikes are welcome, why they’re excluded in Amazon & MaxAir adventures, and plan your ride. At Mountain Bike Colombia, we welcome the growing community of mountain bike eBike riders and are excited to include them in many of our adventures. MTB eBikes can enhance the riding experience and allow more people to enjoy Colombia’s incredible wilderness trails. However, due to the unique conditions of certain expeditions, we must set clear guidelines to ensure safety, compatibility, and respect for the environments and communities we visit.
General Guidelines #
At Mountain Bike Colombia, we celebrate the innovation and accessibility that e-bikes bring to the world of cycling. They allow more riders of varying ages and fitness levels to enjoy challenging trails and breathtaking landscapes. However, to maintain harmony within our groups, we encourage participants to carefully consider the dynamics of mixed riding. Riders on e-bikes often climb and descend at different speeds than those on standard mountain bikes, which can create pacing issues, fatigue mismatches, or logistical delays for the group. For this reason, we generally recommend forming groups that ride either exclusively on e-bikes or exclusively on standard mountain bikes. This ensures smoother coordination, better flow, and a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
When preparing for an e-bike adventure, it’s also essential to factor in the logistical realities of battery use and charging. Riders must carry spare batteries if needed, bring appropriate charging adapters, and maintain their bikes in excellent condition. Our guides are trained to assist in basic troubleshooting, but each participant is ultimately responsible for ensuring their equipment is suitable for the demands of Colombian terrain. By taking these precautions, e-bike riders can maximize both their safety and the quality of their adventure.
Compatibility: For the best group experience, we recommend keeping groups either fully on e-bikes or fully on standard mountain bikes. Mixing the two can create challenges in pacing, energy use, and trail flow.
Terrain Suitability: Most of our guided adventures are e-bike friendly, and our team is happy to advise which trips are most suitable.
Logistics: Riders are responsible for ensuring their e-bike is in proper working condition and compatible with the terrain. Spare batteries, tools, and charging requirements should be considered in advance.
Excluded Adventures for E-Bikes #
E-bikes are not permitted on the following multi-day expeditions:
Amazon MTB Adventures (5- or 9-day expeditions)
MaxAir Adventure
Reasons for Exclusion #
Amazon Adventures (5–9 days):
Remoteness: Expeditions take place in extremely remote wilderness regions with limited access.
Charging Limitations: No reliable charging facilities exist in the Amazon. Transporting and charging high-capacity lithium batteries is not feasible.
Transport Complications: Moving e-bikes and their batteries by small boats, bush planes, or through jungle terrain creates additional risks for the group.
Safety & Group Flow: Standard mountain bikes are the most reliable and practical choice for these expeditions.
MaxAir Adventure:
Cable Transport Safety: The adventure involves the use of aerial cables, where bike weight directly impacts safety systems. E-bikes exceed the safe operational weight for this transport.
Equipment Integrity: The added mass of e-bikes can stress cables, pulleys, and anchors, creating unacceptable safety risks.
Logistics: Similar to Amazon trips, e-bikes complicate transport in remote and rugged conditions.
Where E-Bikes Are Welcome #
Many of our Andean, Coffee Region, and local wilderness rides are well suited to e-bike riders.
E-bikes can be an excellent choice for riders who want to balance endurance and enjoy more of the landscape.
