SHOULD I BRING CASH OR TRAVELER’S CHECKS WHEN VISITING COLOMBIA?

We discourage our guests from bringing traveler’s checks to Colombia. They are not generally accepted and are exchangeable only at select banks and upscale hotels for a price. Traveler’s checks can be more difficult to exchange and you will usually receive a poorer rate or be charged an additional fee. Bank cards are a better way to access local currency from ATMs here and you can withdraw money as you need it. ATMs are readily available in most towns and cities. Withdrawing local currency is done at fair exchange rates using an ATM.
Credit cards are accepted in major cities but can be challenging in smaller towns. In more remote areas there may be difficulties using credit cards, so you do not want to solely rely on them for financial transactions. It is best to have some local currency on hand when traveling to small towns or remote areas.
