Ride the Santa Elena High Country

Santa Elena is the cool, forested high country above Medellín — silletero flower-farm country, cloud forest and quiet rural lanes, noticeably higher and cooler than Guatapé. We run it as a guided day from Guatapé, with small groups and expert local guides.

There are two ways to ride it. Santa Elena XC is a scenic backcountry cross-country day on gravel, dirt roads and forest tracks. Santa Elena Singletrack is a trail-focused day on flowing, rocky, rooty forest singletrack. Both are matched to how your group actually rides.

Santa Elena XC Ride

Santa Elena XC is a real backcountry cross-country day in the cool, high country above Medellín, a different world from Guatapé’s warmer reservoir riding. You climb steadily through cloud-forest and working farmland on gravel and dirt roads, link quiet rural lanes and forest tracks, and earn wide highland views. It is honest, rhythmic mountain biking with a mixed-adventure feel, not a sightseeing cruise and not a downhill day.

Terrain & riding style

Expect gravel and dirt roads, forest tracks and rural lanes, with the occasional bit of trail. Climbing is easy to steady overall; descending is moderately technical (loose surface, some ruts and rock). Traffic is generally low. It is a cross-country experience, distance and flow rather than continuous singletrack.

Climbing & descending

Climbing: steady and rewarding rather than brutal, a fitness ride, not a suffer-fest. Descending: moderately technical on dirt and gravel; confident bike handling helps, but nothing here demands gravity skills.

Guide-curated route

You are buying the Santa Elena riding experience, not a fixed GPS line. Your MBC guide chooses the day’s exact route from an approved network of highland roads, tracks and trails, based on your group’s ability and fitness, the weather, current trail conditions and pace.

Bikes & conditions

A hardtail is completely appropriate; full suspension is also fine, and e-bikes are suitable. Santa Elena XC generally rides well even in the wet; your guide adapts the route to conditions and only reschedules if it is genuinely unsafe.

Rider requirements

  • Recent mountain-bike experience (intermediate or above)
  • Comfortable on gravel/dirt roads and moderately technical descents
  • Fitness for ~2.5–3 hours of steady riding at altitude

Santa Elena Singletrack Ride

This is the trail-rider’s Santa Elena: concentrated time on real forest singletrack in the cool high country above Medellín. Expect flow, roots, rock and genuinely technical sections, linked by climbing that earns the descents. It is a proper mountain-bike day for riders who want the bike working beneath them, not a scenic cruise, and not a shuttle-served downhill product.

Terrain & riding style

Highly trail-focused: forest singletrack that flows, then turns rocky and rooty and technical, connected by climbs and short linking sections. The exact mix of flowing versus technical is chosen on the day to fit your group.

Climbing & descending

Climbing: hard to very hard depending on the chosen variation, generally pedalable, with stronger riders able to clean more of it. Descending: intermediate to strong-intermediate on natural forest trail; skills and line choice matter more than raw nerve.

Guide-curated route

You are buying the Santa Elena singletrack experience, not a fixed trail checklist. Your MBC guide assembles the day from an approved network of trails and connectors, choosing harder or easier variations to match your group’s skill, fitness and the conditions.

Bikes & conditions

Full suspension is preferable for the harder variations; a hardtail can work depending on the route your guide selects. E-bikes are suitable, though some technical sections may be awkward. Some singletrack gets harder when wet, so your guide picks the day’s variation for the conditions.

Is this ride right for you?

Built for intermediate to strong-intermediate riders comfortable on rocky, rooty, technical trail and confident descending natural singletrack, with the fitness for 3.5–4 hours and hard climbing. Backcountry trail throws up natural obstacles; honest rider-level selection matters, and your guide sets the day’s difficulty to your group. It is not an experts-only ride, but it is a real trail day.

Santa Elena XC — Elevation & Climbing

Santa Elena rides in the high country above Medellín. Parque Arví sits at about 2,410 m, and the riding generally sits roughly 2,400–2,600 m, higher and cooler than Guatapé (regional figures; the exact centro elevation is approximate). On XC the climbing is easy to steady overall, and the exact elevation gain for your day is confirmed by your MBC guide, who sets the route to your group and the conditions. We do not publish a fixed elevation profile because the route is chosen on the day.

Santa Elena Singletrack — Elevation & Climbing

The Singletrack day rides the same high country, roughly 2,400–2,600 m. Climbing is hard to very hard depending on the chosen variation, and it earns the descents. As with XC, the exact elevation gain is confirmed by your guide on the day rather than promised as a fixed profile.

A living highland landscape

You are riding through a place people call home. Santa Elena is silletero country, worked for generations by the families who shaped these mountains. We ride in small guided groups and with respect for the people and the land along the way. Mountain Bike Colombia is a wilderness-experience company with a mission beyond the ride, and all proceeds we earn are reinvested into that wider work.
