The Guatapé ride is the best introduction to what cycling in Colombia actually feels like. You leave Casa de Ciclistas and within minutes you are on backcountry trails that most visitors never find — past coffee farms, Andean hillsides, and views of La Piedra del Peñol that no tour bus reaches.
This is a guided 38 km ride through rolling terrain, with photo stops built in, a bilingual local guide who knows every corner of the route, and small groups capped at 8 riders so it never feels crowded.
All proceeds are reinvested into Dulce Amazónica and the Amazon Cultural Embassy — so the ride connects directly to the larger mission.
This Ride Is For You If
- You want to actually see Guatapé, not just El Peñol
- You are comfortable on a bike but do not need to be a racer
- You want a small group with a local guide, not a tourist convoy
- You enjoy coffee farms, viewpoints, and wildlife
- You like having photo stops built into the route
This Ride Is Not For You If
- You have never ridden a bike before
- You expect a paved, fully flat route
- You need a guarantee of perfect weather
- You want a solo private guide without booking in advance
The Route
You depart from Casa de Ciclistas in Guatapé and immediately head off the main roads into the backcountry. The 38 km loop takes you through small coffee farms, past hidden viewpoints of El Embalse del Peñol, and along ridgelines that look out over the surrounding Andes.
The terrain is rolling — not flat, not technical. There are gentle climbs and short descents. No singletrack experience needed. The guide sets the pace and stops frequently for photos, wildlife, and route context.
If you want to add the El Peñol summit (740 steps to the top), that can be arranged on the day. Ask your guide.

Questions
Where does the ride start?
Casa de Ciclistas in Guatapé. We will confirm the exact address and meeting time when you book.
How do I get to Guatapé?
Bus from Terminal Norte in Medellín (2 hours, around $5 USD) or taxi or Uber. Shuttles are also available. Simple and scenic.
Do I need my own bike?
No. Bikes and helmets are provided. If you have your own trail or all-mountain MTB, you are welcome to bring it.
Is this suitable for beginners?
Yes, with a caveat. You need to be comfortable on a bike on unpaved terrain. If you have never ridden a bicycle before, this is not the right starting point. If you ride occasionally on any terrain, you will be fine.
Can I add the El Peñol climb?
Yes. You can climb El Peñol (740 steps to the top) before or after the ride. There is an entry fee. Ask your guide on the day.
What happens if it rains?
We ride unless conditions are unsafe. Light rain is normal and the trails handle it well. If there is a severe storm, we reschedule or refund.
Can I book a private group ride?
Yes. Private groups are available any day of the week. Minimum 2 riders. Contact us via WhatsApp or the booking form.
What should I bring?
Water, sunscreen, a light jacket (mornings can be cool), and comfortable clothes you do not mind getting dusty. Gloves are a good idea.
Is there a free ride option?
Yes — there is a free morning ride available in Guatapé for riders who want a shorter, no-commitment introduction. Ask us about it.
