The 3 Piedras is a full-day MTB adventure that combines a lake crossing by boat with 65 km of riding through the Andean countryside around the Embalse del Peñol. The route takes you past three iconic granite monolith formations — the Tres Piedras — through rural farming communities most visitors never reach.

You depart Guatapé by boat, crossing the reservoir and passing the submerged remains of Old Peñol and Pablo Escobar’s island. Then you ride. Colombian countryside, forest roads, and views that justify every climb.

This is an intermediate ride. You need to be comfortable on unpaved terrain for a full day. Fitness rating 3 of 6.

This Ride Is For You If

  • You want a full-day adventure, not a quick loop
  • You are comfortable riding 60+ km on mixed terrain
  • You enjoy combining water transport with riding
  • You want to get off the tourist trail and into real Antioquia countryside
  • History and geography interest you as much as the riding

This Ride Is Not For You If

  • You are new to trail riding or haven’t ridden in a while
  • You want a short, casual morning ride
  • Full-day physical exertion is not something you enjoy
  • You need a perfectly flat, paved route

The Route

The adventure starts with a boat crossing of the Embalse del Peñol — one of the most striking reservoirs in Colombia. As you cross, your guide points out the remaining church steeple of Old Peñol (the original town that was flooded in the 1970s) and the island that once belonged to Pablo Escobar.

Once on the far shore, you mount up and ride 65 km through Antioquia countryside. Rolling hills, rural villages, and three granite monolith formations — the Tres Piedras — that rise dramatically from the surrounding farmland. The route loops back to Guatapé by road.
