The Camino de Oropendolas is a wilderness trail connecting Guatapé to San Rafael through one of the most biodiverse corridors in Antioquia. The route descends from Andean cloud forest into lush lowland rainforest — 38 km of trail with an elevation drop from 2,600 to 1,800 meters.
The trail is named for the Oropéndola birds that nest along the route. You will likely see two species, multiple toucan varieties, tanagers, monkeys, sloths, and armadillos. Colombia is the most biodiverse country on Earth for birds — 1,878 species. This ride cuts through habitat that earns that number.
Breakfast and lunch are included. Starts at Casa de Ciclistas. Intermediate riding skill required.
This Ride Is For You If
- Wildlife and photography are as important to you as the ride itself
- You want a descending trail with elevation change, not just flat roads
- You are comfortable on unpaved forest trails
- Biodiversity — birds, monkeys, plants — genuinely excites you
- You want a full day in the wilderness, not a loop through towns
This Ride Is Not For You If
- Wildlife encounters make you uncomfortable
- You expect a flat, paved route
- You are not comfortable on loose or rooty forest trails
- A full day outdoors with limited facilities is not your thing
The Trail
The ride begins at Casa de Ciclistas and climbs briefly before dropping into the Oropéndola corridor. From here the trail descends through two distinct ecosystems — Andean cloud forest in the upper section, transitioning to tropical rainforest below 2,000 meters.
The Oropéndola birds are usually audible before you see them — their hanging basket nests are visible from the trail. Your guide stops at key wildlife areas and photo points throughout the descent. There are waterfall swimming spots on the lower section.
What to Expect
Breakfast is served at Casa de Ciclistas before departure. Lunch is included on the trail. Your guide provides orientation, bike and helmet fitting, water, sports hydration, and power snacks throughout the day.
Bring a camera. This route rewards it. A chest or hip mount for small cameras works well on the descent. Larger gear can ride in the support vehicle. Small drones are allowed on most of the route — ask your guide about restrictions near communities.

Casa de Ciclistas in Guatapé. Bikes, helmets, and all gear are provided on-site.
How technical is the trail?
Intermediate. There are rooty and loose sections in the forest descent, but no exposed drops or technical features that require advanced skill. Confidence on unpaved terrain is the main requirement.
What wildlife will I see?
Oropéndola birds are almost guaranteed. Toucans are frequent. Monkeys (Howler, Spider, Squirrel) appear in the lower forest. Sloths and armadillos are possible. Sightings vary by season and time of day.
Is lunch really included?
Yes. Breakfast at Casa de Ciclistas and lunch on the trail. Let us know your dietary needs when you book.
Can I bring a drone?
Small drones are welcome on most of the route. There are restrictions near some communities. Your guide will advise on the day.
What happens if it rains?
Light rain is normal and makes the forest more active. Moderate rain: we adjust pace and stops. Severe conditions: we reschedule or refund.
