Guatapé from above, at a pace that lets you see it
Most rides through this countryside are about distance. This one is about the places where you stop. In about 25 km you climb to four viewpoints above Guatapé and stay at each one long enough for your guide to explain what you are looking at, for a snack, and for photographs when the light is good. Between stops the riding is steady dirt-road climbs, rolling ridge road and a few faster descents back toward the water.
It takes approximately four to five hours because roughly half of that time is spent off the bike, by design. It is an intermediate ride: the climbs are real, on dirt and gravel, but there is no technical singletrack.
All proceeds we earn are reinvested. The proceeds Mountain Bike Colombia earns from this ride support our ongoing work with Indigenous communities and Amazon initiatives. This is a fair-priced ride, not a donation; that is where the support comes from.
Price and what it pays for
COP 300,000 per person for two riders. COP 250,000 per person for three or more. The two-rider price covers one guide and one support plan shared by fewer people; from three riders the per-person price drops. Deposit COP 100,000 per rider. The remaining balance is due at check-in. Minimum two riders, maximum eight.
Why a shorter ride takes longer and costs more than our Backcountry loop
Our Guatapé Backcountry MTB ride covers about 38 km in about 2.5 hours from COP 155,000 and is the faster way into the countryside. This ride is different, not better: a slower guided pace; four extended viewpoint stops instead of quick photo halts; local interpretation at each stop; moderate climbing to reach ridge viewpoints; a snack and water refill; a small group with a guide committed for the whole half day; and simply more time in the landscape. If you want kilometres, book the Backcountry ride. If you want the views explained and time to take them in, book this one.
This Ride Is for You If
- You would rather stop at four places for a long time than pass twenty in a hurry.
- You ride regularly, can hold a steady pace on a sustained dirt climb, and can descend loose gravel with control.
- You want the reservoir, the river canyon and the islands explained, not just photographed.
- You are happy to be out for four to five hours, including a proper snack stop.
- You are riding as a pair or a small group and want the same guide from start to finish.
This Ride Is Not for You If
- You cannot confidently ride a bicycle on unpaved ground.
- You want maximum kilometres for the time; the Backcountry ride covers more ground faster.
- You expect a flat, paved route.
- You need the weather to cooperate; low cloud can shorten a viewpoint stop.
- You are looking for a technical singletrack day; the Mono Cuco Trail is that ride.

The Route
You leave Casa de Ciclistas and are on dirt within a few minutes. The first climb takes you out of the reservoir basin and onto the farm tracks that run along the ridges, where the surface changes between packed dirt and gravel. The forest here is premontane: humid, green through the year, with shaded sections and open pasture. The loop is about 25 km. Each viewpoint gets a real stop. Between them the riding is steady climbs, rolling ridge road and a few faster descents back toward the water. Your guide sets the pace and chooses the order of the stops on the day, according to weather and the group.
The Viewpoints
Balcón de los Dioses
A high balcony over the Peñol-Guatapé reservoir, with the islands and drowned valleys laid out below.
The Guatapé River canyon
Where the water leaves the reservoir the land drops into a forested canyon. The viewpoint looks down its length; on clear mornings you can see the far ridgelines.
The Islitas viewpoint
The reservoir’s islands from above, the fingers of water between them, and the farmland that runs down to the shoreline.
The trail viewpoint above town
The fourth viewpoint is on the trail that climbs past the antennas above Guatapé. We ride the trail and stop at the viewpoint; we do not enter or visit the antenna facility. From here the whole basin opens up at once: the town below, the reservoir and its islands, and La Piedra del Peñol across the water. This is the view on this page’s hero image.
The forest along the way is home to birds and small mammals. We stop when we see something; we never promise a sighting.
Meeting Point
Casa de Ciclistas, the restaurant and cycling hub in the centre of Guatapé. Bikes and helmets are fitted here before the 7:30 a.m. departure; the ride starts and ends at the door. From Medellín, Guatapé is about two hours by bus from Terminal Norte, or by taxi or shuttle. Please arrive by 7:15 a.m. for fitting and a short briefing.

Required Riding Ability
Intermediate on our scale: you ride regularly, you can manage a sustained dirt climb at your own pace, and you can descend gravel with control. No singletrack skills are needed. You must be able to ride a bicycle confidently before you arrive; this is not a place to learn. If you sit between our levels, say so when you book and we will give you a straight answer.

What to Bring
- Suitable riding clothes you do not mind getting dusty; gloves recommended
- Sun protection: sunscreen, sunglasses, a cap under the helmet
- A water bottle, and additional water if you need more than the refill
- A light rain shell or windproof layer for the descents
- Personal medication
- Your own trail bike or e-bike if you prefer it to ours (tell us when you book)
E-bikes
Rider-owned e-bikes are welcome on this ride. Tell us when you book so the guide can plan the pace. We do not rent e-bikes, and we do not carry spare batteries, charging or mechanical support for them; you ride yours on your own terms.
Weather and Route-Change Policy
We ride in light rain; the tracks handle it. Because this ride is about the views, your guide may shorten a stop or change the order of the viewpoints when cloud sits on the ridges. That is a judgement call made on the day, not a failure of the ride. Severe weather and cancellations are handled under our Booking and Cancellation Policy.
Safety and Guide Authority
Your guide sets the pace, chooses the line through any section and decides when a stop is cut short; that decision is final. Helmets are worn at all times on the bike. Your guide is first-aid trained and carries a first-aid kit and a charged telephone for emergency communication. Mountain Bike Colombia does not provide insurance; personal travel and medical cover is your responsibility.
Questions
How is this different from the Guatapé Backcountry MTB ride?
The Backcountry ride covers about 38 km in about 2.5 hours from COP 155,000 and is beginner-friendly. This ride covers about 25 km in four to five hours, climbs to four viewpoints and stops at each for a long time, includes a snack and water refill and a guide for the whole half day, and needs intermediate fitness. It costs more because of the guided hours, the climbing, the stops and the small-group economics, not because it is better.
Why does a shorter ride take longer?
Roughly half the time is spent off the bike, at the viewpoints and the snack stop, by design.
Why is the two-rider price higher?
For a group of two the price is COP 300,000 per person (COP 600,000 in total), because one guide and one support plan are shared by fewer people. From three riders the price is COP 250,000 per person.
Can I book alone?
The minimum is two riders. Ask us on WhatsApp whether a departure with space exists; a message does not reserve a place.
Do I need my own bike?
No. MBC mountain bikes and helmets are provided, subject to sizing and availability, so book ahead. Bring your own trail bike or e-bike if you prefer, and tell us when you book.
Are e-bikes allowed?
Rider-owned e-bikes, yes. We do not rent them or provide batteries, charging or mechanical support.
Is it suitable for beginners?
Only if you already ride confidently on unpaved ground and can manage steady climbs. If you have never ridden a bicycle, no; the Free Morning Ride and the Backcountry ride are better starting points.
What if it rains or the viewpoints are in cloud?
We ride in light rain. Your guide may shorten a stop or reorder the viewpoints. Severe weather is handled under our Booking and Cancellation Policy.
Is insurance included?
No. Mountain Bike Colombia does not provide visitor accident insurance. Personal travel and medical insurance is recommended for every rider.
Will I get photos?
Your guide takes casual phone photographs when conditions allow and shares them as a courtesy. There is no professional photography or video and no guaranteed set of photos.
What time does it start and how far ahead should I book?
7:30 a.m., daily by reservation, normally booked at least 24 hours in advance. Allow five hours plus time for breakfast at Casa de Ciclistas.
Do the viewpoints charge admission?
No. None of the four viewpoints charges admission.
