What Is the Best Time of Year to Mountain Bike in Colombia?
There is no single best month to mountain bike across Colombia. In many of the Andean areas we ride, relatively wetter conditions often develop from around mid-March into June, with another wetter tendency often around September through November, while relatively lower-rainfall periods often occur around the beginning and the middle of the year. Those are tendencies, not guarantees, and they vary by location. The better time for your trip depends on where you are riding, the elevation, the surface, recent rainfall, and how much wet riding you are comfortable with.
So the useful question is not “when is Colombia dry.” It is “when should I plan a riding trip for the region and kind of riding I want, and how do I read conditions once I am here.” This page is built to answer that.
Why there is no single national season
The tourism shorthand is that Colombia has a dry season from about December to March and that this is the time to come. For planning a mountain-bike trip, that is not a reliable rule. It misses how differently rainfall behaves across the country, and it quietly extends “dry” into months that, in several riding areas, are not.
A more honest picture for the Andean and interior environments we ride most: many of these areas tend to see relatively wetter conditions develop from around mid-March into June, with another wetter tendency later in the year, often around September through November, while relatively lower-rainfall periods often occur around the beginning and the middle of the year. Colombia’s meteorological institute, IDEAM, describes a major higher-rainfall period across much of the Andean region that establishes from around the middle of March through the middle of the year. This is a pattern for much of Colombia’s Andean region, not a national rule: the Amazon, the Pacific and other environments do not have to follow it. And even within the Andean areas, the timing and intensity vary by location, sometimes over surprisingly short distances, because valley orientation, altitude, and local geography all shape how much rain a given place gets and when.
The practical takeaway is not a calendar. It is that “the dry season” is the wrong unit. You are choosing conditions for a region, not for a country.
Elevation often matters more than the month
Colombia sits near the equator, so the calendar does far less to temperature here than it does at home. What changes the temperature of a ride is mostly altitude. Temperature generally falls as you climb, so a high-elevation ride can feel dramatically different from the valley it started in, on the same day, in the same month.
That has two consequences for timing. First, you are not really packing for “Colombia.” You are packing for a region, an elevation, and a type of ride. A warm valley morning and a cold, wind-exposed high pass can belong to the same route. Second, a national “season” tells you very little about what a specific day at a specific altitude will feel like. The higher and more exposed the riding, the more the day’s conditions, not the month, govern how it goes.
Rainfall is not the same as rideability
This is the idea most weather pages miss, and it is the one worth keeping in mind above all the others. How much rain a place gets is not the same as how a trail actually rides.
Two things pull them apart. The first is that a given amount of rain affects different ground differently. Surface, drainage, how recently rain fell, the condition and maintenance of the route, the elevation, and the exposure all shape whether a trail rides well or turns into a slog. A rainfall chart cannot see any of that. The second is timing. For some ground, what fell in the last day or two matters far more than the monthly average. A wetter month can ride fine two clear days after a storm, and a drier month can ride poorly the morning after a hard overnight rain.
None of this means rain automatically stops the riding. Depending on the surface, the route, recent rainfall, the weather, and operating conditions, a ride may continue, change route, change its start time, or stop and be cancelled if conditions require it. A monthly rainfall figure is a planning input, not a verdict on a particular ride. The verdict comes from current and recent conditions on the actual ground.
Climate, forecast, and today’s conditions
The cleanest way to think about timing is to separate three different kinds of information, because each answers a different question.
- Climate normals are the long-run averages. They help you decide when to plan a trip: which broad window tends to be drier or wetter for the region you want. They describe tendencies, not any particular week.
- The forecast for the next several days helps you decide what weather may affect them: whether to pack differently, adjust expectations, or shift plans.
- Recent and on-the-ground conditions help decide what route makes sense today: what fell overnight, whether a road washed out, whether the high country is fogged in, whether a surface has drained.
Planning a trip from climate normals and then reading the actual conditions on arrival is how experienced riders handle this anywhere. Climate helps you plan the trip. Current conditions choose the ride.
When to ride, region by region
Rather than a national calendar, here is how the picture changes across the environments we actually ride.
Guatapé and the surrounding Antioquia highlands. For trip timing here, rainfall, recent surface conditions and route choice are more useful planning variables than a national season label. The broad Andean wetter and less-wet tendency is useful for choosing a window, but current conditions still determine the ride.
The Coffee Region. Rainfall is an important planning factor here, and rides can move between lower and higher elevations, so one temperature or surface expectation does not describe the whole experience. Expect the wetter and less-wet tendency of the Andean interior, plus more cloud and cooler conditions as a route gains altitude.
Higher Andean riding. At altitude the limiting factor is usually not the month but the combination of cold, wind, exposure, and the chance of rain or fog on any given day. Even in a relatively less-wet window, a high day can be cold and wet. This is the riding where reading current conditions matters most, and where the drier tendencies are worth using but never relied on.
Paisa multi-day riding. This is best understood as a multi-day riding experience that moves through different elevations and environments rather than a single climate zone. Across a route like this the temperature and the way the ground behaves can change with the elevation profile from one section to the next, so no single description of “the weather” fits the whole trip. The broad seasonal tendencies of the interior apply, but the day-to-day reality is shaped by where the route is that day.
The Amazon expedition environment. This one should not be planned using the same seasonal shorthand as Andean riding. MBC’s operating environment for an Amazon departure can vary, so the relevant climate and current conditions need to be evaluated for the area planned for that departure. There is no fixed month that is always best, and no single place whose weather chart stands in for the whole expedition. If you are asking about timing for the Amazon, the honest answer is that it depends on the environment planned for your specific departure, not on a general calendar.

Best for what?
“Best” only means something once you say what you are optimizing for. A few honest ways to read it:
- If you want firmer, less-wet conditions, aim for the relatively lower-rainfall tendencies in the Andean interior and still plan for the chance of rain. Recent conditions will matter more than the month you picked.
- If you do not mind riding in the wet, the wetter tendencies are, as the pillar puts it, different rather than worse.
- If high-elevation riding is a priority, a relatively lower-rainfall period may improve the odds of encountering less rain, but cold, wind, cloud and rapidly changing conditions can still matter on the day.
- If you are planning multi-day riding, remember the route moves through different elevations and environments, so plan for range rather than a single condition.
- If you are planning the Amazon expedition, current expedition conditions matter more than any national season, and timing should be evaluated for the environment planned for your departure.
Can you ride year-round?
There is no single national mountain-bike off-season when all riding in Colombia stops. That does not mean every route or region offers the same conditions throughout the year. Rainfall changes, surfaces change, the weather changes, the sensible route choices change, and recent conditions matter. “No single off-season” is not the same as “equally good every day,” and we would rather be clear about that than imply a consistency the weather cannot keep.
